Laser Fungal Nail Treatment
Fungal nail infections can cause nails to become thickened, discoloured, brittle, distorted or difficult to manage. Our Laser Fungal Nail Treatment provides a professional, non-invasive treatment option for suitable clients experiencing persistent or stubborn fungal nail concerns.
Using targeted laser energy, treatment is applied directly to the affected nail and surrounding area as appropriate. The aim is to create conditions that are less favourable for fungal activity while allowing healthier nail growth to gradually replace the affected nail over time.
Because toenails grow slowly, improvement is gradual and results cannot be assessed immediately after treatment.
What Can Fungal Nail Infection Look Like?
Fungal nail infection, also known as onychomycosis, may cause changes including:
- Yellow, white or brown discolouration
- Thickened nails
- Brittle or crumbly nail edges
- Distorted nail shape
- Debris beneath the nail
- Separation of the nail from the nail bed
- Difficulty cutting or managing the nail
- Multiple nails becoming affected over time
Not every thickened or discoloured nail is caused by fungus. Trauma, psoriasis and other nail conditions can sometimes produce similar changes, so appropriate assessment is important before treatment.
How Does Laser Fungal Nail Treatment Work?
Laser energy is delivered through the nail plate into the affected area.
Treatment is designed to target the environment associated with fungal nail infection without physically removing the nail.
The procedure does not usually require injections or anaesthetic, and there is generally little disruption to normal daily activities following treatment.
As the nail grows, the aim is for clearer and healthier-looking nail to gradually emerge from the base.
What Happens During Your Appointment?
Before treatment, we will assess the affected nail or nails and discuss:
- How long the problem has been present
- Previous treatments
- Whether one or several nails are affected
- Any pain, inflammation or other symptoms
- Relevant medical history
- Current medications
- Foot and nail care
- Whether laser treatment is appropriate for you
The nails may need to be appropriately prepared before laser treatment so that the energy can be delivered effectively.
The laser is then applied systematically across the affected nail and surrounding area where appropriate.
You may notice a warming sensation during treatment. Treatment intensity is adjusted according to your comfort and clinical assessment.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Fungal nail concerns often require a treatment course rather than a single appointment.
The number of sessions recommended will depend on factors including:
- The number of nails affected
- Severity of the nail changes
- How long the infection has been present
- Nail thickness
- Previous treatments
- Individual response
Your progress can be reviewed as the nail grows.
It is important to remember that toenails grow slowly. A completely new toenail can take many months to grow through, so visible improvement is usually gradual rather than immediate.
Supporting Your Treatment
Managing fungal nail infection often involves more than treating the nail itself.
You may be advised to take steps such as:
- Keeping feet clean and dry
- Changing socks regularly
- Allowing footwear to dry thoroughly
- Avoiding sharing nail clippers or footwear
- Disinfecting or replacing contaminated footwear where appropriate
- Treating associated athlete’s foot if present
- Maintaining appropriate nail care
These measures can help reduce the risk of reinfection while the nail grows.
When Further Assessment May Be Needed
Some nail changes require additional medical assessment before laser treatment.
We may recommend further investigation or GP, dermatology or podiatry assessment if:
- The diagnosis is uncertain
- There is significant pain or inflammation
- The surrounding skin appears infected
- The nail has unusual pigmentation or unexplained changes
- There is significant underlying foot disease
- Treatment has repeatedly failed
- Your medical history makes specialist assessment more appropriate
Where necessary, confirmation of fungal infection may also be recommended before treatment.
After Treatment
There is usually minimal downtime following laser fungal nail treatment.
The nail itself will not immediately look different. Instead, any improvement is seen gradually as new nail grows from the base.
You will be given appropriate nail and foot-care advice following your appointment.
